Contractor or Employee? Getting Worker Classification Right at Your Nonprofit

Thursday, November 19, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (PST)

Your grant writer works from home and sends monthly invoices. Your program coordinator is paid from a one-year grant. Your part-time CFO also works for three other organizations. Are they contractors or employees? Under California law, the answer may surprise you.

Nonprofits rely on a mix of staff, consultants, vendors, interns, and volunteers. But a “consultant” title, a 1099, or a signed contractor agreement doesn’t decide how someone is classified. What matters is how the work actually happens, not the label, the funding source, or even what the worker prefers. Getting it wrong can mean back wages, penalties, and tax liability, which are risks that executive leaders manage and boards are responsible for overseeing.

Designed for nonprofit executives and board members, this practical webinar covers:

  • How California’s ABC Test works, and when other rules apply instead
  • How classification plays out in common nonprofit situations, including grant-funded and temporary roles, grant writers, and fractional finance staff
  • Warning signs that an arrangement deserves a closer look
  • Practical steps leaders can take, and questions boards can ask, to strengthen classification practices

Getting classification right protects your organization and treats the people who power your mission fairly. Being a responsible employer is part of being a responsible nonprofit.

Ensuring Compliance with HR Issues When Using Volunteers and Interns

(August 20, 2026)

Volunteers (interns, externs, field placement students, Corps members, fellows, etc.) power nonprofits — but misclassifying them can create serious legal exposure. This practical, interactive session covers the basic rules in plain language: what makes someone a true volunteer instead of an employee under California law, how interns are different, what you can (and can’t) give volunteers, and the obligations as a nonprofit organization employer — harassment protections, workers’ compensation, insurance — that apply even when they are not on payroll. You’ll leave with a step-by-step checklist and a detailed reference guide. The session includes live polls, real-world scenarios, and a guided Q&A
